THE TRADING POST
YA'AH'TEE

During the current economic “hardtimes”, many people are turning to barter. I suppose that’s all well and good, exchanging things for “funny money” which, in turn can be traded for things needed. Here at the Trading Post, though, we’re about something different.

Over the years, I’ve had a lot of fun trading art for other things that I’ve wanted, needed, or thought I could trade for something else. I’ve traded for cars, a mustang convertible being the most fun, a year’s lease on a Ford  sedan with all services included, the most practical, and a Chevy Pickup when I already had a Ford pickup, probably the least practical. No, maybe that was the pair of pearl handled derringers. I’ve traded for a side of beef with a local rancher, and for chickens with my uncle. And some rabbits. But that’s another story for another time. I have traded for a great deal of Indian Jewelry, rugs, pottery, Kachinas, etc. Mainly, I’ve traded for the shear fun of trading!

I like to call it “horse trading”, though horses are seldom or never involved, unless they’re my own painted horses. Horse traders are notorious for trying to get the best of the other guy. I don’t hold with that. I’ve always thought that the only good trade was a trade in which both sides come out ahead. And that can happen. If you want what I have more than you want what you have, and we make a swap, you come out ahead. And if, at the same time, I want what you have more than I want what I have, I come out ahead. Win, win. No losers, two gainers, everyone’s happy.

So. Think it over. If you see something on my website that you’d like to own, but don’t have or want to part with the cash, just now, think about what you might have of similar value that you’re done with, but that I might have a use for. If it’s something I really want or need, we just might have a trade cooking. If it’s something that I don’t have a use for, but think I can turn over, we might talk part cash, part trade.

I’ve traded, in the past, for art, appliances, books, cameras, rent, professional services, you name it. So be creative, and don’t be afraid to make an offer. Keep in mind that I love to travel, so airline tickets (see below), lodging and accommodations in interesting places, are of interest. Thea loves jewelry, clothes, shoes, shopping, furniture, you know, girl stuff. I’ll be posting some needs and desires here in the Trading Post, soon.

Think it over. Shop the site, and give us a call. We’ll probably come up with something beneficial to us both. We’ll definitely have some fun trying.

PS If you’ve got some cash you’d rather part with than anything else, remember,  I’m easy.

Johnson James waiting on a customer in the trading post at Upper Greasewood, on the Navajo Reservation between Tsaile and Lukachukai, Arizona. I worked there as a trader, and returned later, when I began painting full-time, on a sponsorship. The life of a trader is a hard one, but it is an experience I will never forget. And to live among the Navajo as a young artist was a priceless privilege.
