HORSE PAINTINGS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE:
And just to give you an idea of the size, this is what the piece looks like in my studio. Or did, for a day or two, before I took it down to hang in the Premiere Gallery Collection at La Posada Resort and Spa, here in Santa Fe.
If you get a chance, please drop by the Hotel and have a look. It's hanging right inside the main entrance, next to the concierge desk, on the right.

In September of 2008, and again in November, I traveled to Argentina to photograph the Gaucho and his horse. LA POSADA HARLEQUINS is the first of the paintings from those exciting and rewarding trips. My first introduction to the Tropilla, or Troop, depicted here, was on the Hacienda el Ombú, where the young Gaucho, Pablo, demonstrated his ability to maneuver his remuda of ten or twelve horses by using the herd’s natural instinct to follow and obey the lead, or bell mare. (At night, out on the Pampa, the Gaucho has only to stake the bell mare, as the others will not drift out of hearing distance of her bell. And in the morning, they quickly fall in behind her when the Gaucho is ready to ride on. He rides a different horse from the group each day, but never the bell mare.
(She is usually, though not always, of a distinctly different color than the rest of the group).
Then, on my return visit to attend the Feria Tradicional, a gathering of thousands of Gauchos to celebrate their traditions and events, much like our own early rodeos, with camping, parades, dancing and feats of horsemanship and ranch, or estancia, work, I saw and photographed La Tropilla, an event in which horses from many different estancias are let into a vast, fenced arena, and allowed to mill about and blend into a single, large group. When they are thoroughly blended, the gauchos from the various estancias ride in with their bell mares, and, in a gracefully efficient demonstration, all of the individual groups quickly re-form and are led away.
I took thousands of photographs and video files during the Feria, which I later loaded into my computer, edited, sorted, and combed through looking for the animals that I could best use to convey my excitement and appreciation of this thrilling event. I cut out and rearranged them in the computer to create a composition I felt would make a compelling painting. I then printed the result, and used it as my guide when painting LA POSADA HARLEQUINS.
