These next five images are pen and watercolor studies for a commissioned painting.

Our friend Lucia Kaelin, in Zurich, commissioned a confection style portrait of her dog, Cody. I showed her three to choose from, and she chose all three!
Somewhat larger and more deliberate than my Confections, studies are usually created as a means to an end. I often use them to arrive at compositional decisions on the way to making a full-fledged painting. Colors are considered, and the “feel”, the statement I’m looking for is established. In the case of a commission, they are useful in allowing the client an opportunity to join me in the decision making process. Judging by their popularity, I’d say they look good on walls and in collections, too.
I started drawing in ink and adding watercolor accents a couple of years ago as a relief from the intensity of my other work. I found it such a delightful and refreshing way of working that I started calling the results "Confections". They were like dessert to me; a sweet treat, a reward. I also started using this technique for preliminary studies for commissions and other large paintings. Apparently collectors get as much of a kick out of them as I do, as I can barely keep up with the demand. They make great beginning collector pieces, gifts, and small, personal parts of existing collections.

These buffalo (American Bison) from the San Juan Pueblo herd are among my favorite subjects for my new series of line and wash drawings that I call "Confections" because painting them is like dessert for me.
These studies are from an Arabian Horse in a painting by Schreyer in the Phoenix Art Museum, and are a part of my "OLD MASTERS' SERIES".
